Statue in the National Portrait Gallery

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I’m based in Durham, North Carolina, but recently had the opportunity to attend a conference in Washington DC for my day job.

After four days at the conference it was time to visit the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute and make some pictures. I was pleasantly surprised that the Portrait Gallery has a number of very beautiful statues as well, like the one in the picture posted below.

Adobe released upgrade to Lightroom 2.3

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Adobe just released an upgrade to Lightroom, the most up to date version is now 2.3.

To get the upgrade you can just check for updates from within Lightroom 2, which will then open your browser and give you the option to download the upgrade.

It seems as if this upgrade is mostly a bugfix release, at least according to the Lightroom Blog at Adobe. Nevertheless, always good to stay up to date with the software. I just installed the update with no problems.

Backup? What backup?

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Scott Bourne, one of the brains behind TWIP, just started a new blog about digital storage and backups:

My Digital Life (MYDL)

I keep saying this over and over again: It’s not a question if the harddrive in you computer will fail, the question is only when it will fail. You don’t want to loose all your precious family pictures, so please be organized with your backups!

Edit: As of Today (August 31, 2009) the My Digital Life (MYDL) Podcast and the corresponding Blog has been discontinued.

When is “Fair Use” really fair?

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

The concept of “Fair Use” is probably one of most misunderstood concepts when it comes to using photographs found on the internet. The currently most prominent example is the problem with the Obama poster and Garcias photograph the poster is (might be?) based on.

The Photo Attorney published a blog post yesterday, discussing the concept of “Fair Use” in connection with a group on Flickr. A good read for anybody interested in this topic.
