Cobblestones in San Francisco

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I guess I currently have my “grainy black and white”-phase, which is not really surprising.

When I started to show interest in photography in my early teens (about thirty years ago, just to date myself), I was fascinated with those black and white pictures with really nice, contrasty grain patterns. As a matter of fact, I think I can trace my interest in photography back to one specific black and white picture, which I saw in a magazine when I was something like twelve or thirteen years old.

The above picture is an image I took during my last trip to San Francisco (love that city), a small street somewhere in Ashbury Heights. The pattern of light was created by the early morning sun and some trees, I think it was something like 6:15 in the morning.

Raleigh Museum of Art

Just another image from my trip to the Museum of Art in Raleigh (NC) last weekend.

This image is from the “Rodin courtyard”, a collection of Rodin sculptures in an outdoor area.

Mona Lisa in a Sphere

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Yesterday I went to the Art Museum in Raleigh, which has undergone some major renovations in the recent past.

The new building is not exactly beautiful from the outside, but I do like the clean and simple inside of the museum. It has a nice collection with a few items from several different art periods, so it’s a good place to compare creative creations from different time periods and cultures.

One of the nice things in this new art museum is that they let you take pictures (without a tripod of course).

The installation that drew my attention was “After The Mona Lisa 2” by Devorah Sperber:

This face of Mona Lisa was constructed out of thread spools, and if you are interested this is how the installation actually looks like.

Green Energy – good or not?

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Yes, I do realize that the title of this post is extremely misleading. Just bear with me for a moment, please?

A few days ago I took a picture, which I titled “Green Energy”. It’s a very simple image of a power outlet in an abandoned wall.

I submitted this picture to some of the stock image agencies that I use to sell my photographs. While it is always somewhat entertaining to see if the pictures are accepted into the collection, this picture was special:

One agency rejected the above picture with the comment that it doesn’t “reach our desired level of aesthetic quality” while the next agency not only accepted the picture, but even gave it a five-out-of-five star rating. It just gets to show you how very subjective photography is!
